Why First Aid Courses Used to Be So Confusing
For many years, first aid training across Canada lacked standardization.
Different provinces—and even different training providers—offered courses with:
- Different names
- Different requirements
- Limited transferability between regions
This created challenges for students who:
- Moved between provinces
- Changed jobs
- Needed updated certifications
In many cases, people were required to take transition courses that added little new knowledge.
Common First Aid Courses Over the Past 20 Years
Here are just some of the courses that were offered across Canada:
- Emergency Medical Responder
- First Responder
- Occupational First Aid (Levels 1, 2, 3)
- Basic Life Support
- CPR for Healthcare Providers
- Emergency First Aid
- Standard First Aid
- Advanced First Aid
- Wilderness First Aid
- Childcare First Aid
For many students, understanding which course they actually needed was overwhelming.
How CSA Standards Simplified First Aid Training
To address this confusion, Canada introduced CSA (Canadian Standards Association) guidelines to standardize training across the country.
These changes simplified first aid certification into three main levels:
1. Basic First Aid
Replaces:
- Emergency First Aid
- OFA Level 1
- Occupational First Aid Level 1
2. Intermediate First Aid
Replaces:
- Standard First Aid
This is now one of the most commonly required certifications.
3. Advanced First Aid
Replaces:
- OFA Level 3
- First Responder
- Emergency Medical Responder
- Some Wilderness First Aid programs
What Changed for CPR Training
CPR training has also been simplified.
Today, the main healthcare-level course is:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
This replaced:
- CPR for Healthcare Providers (HCP)
- Older CPR healthcare-level programs
Courses That Have Been Phased Out
Some courses are no longer widely offered, including:
- Occupational First Aid Level 2
- OFA Level 2
These have been replaced by updated, standardized programs.
Courses That Remain Largely Unchanged
Some specialized courses have stayed consistent:
- Standard Childcare First Aid
- Emergency Childcare First Aid
These continue to meet specific industry requirements.
